Understanding Covenant Theology
Journey through the biblical concept of covenant from Genesis to Revelation. Explore ברית (berit) in its ancient Near Eastern context, trace covenant development through Scripture, and understand how covenant shapes biblical theology.
Overview
Why Study Covenant Theology?
Covenant is the organizing principle of Scripture. From God’s first promises to Adam and Noah through the climactic announcement of the New Covenant, the biblical narrative is structured around divine-human agreements.
Understanding covenant theology transforms how you read the Bible:
1. Connects the Testaments
The Old and New Testaments aren’t separate books—they’re one covenant story. Jesus doesn’t replace the old covenants; he fulfills and renews them. The Last Supper makes no sense without understanding Passover, Sinai, and Jeremiah 31.
2. Reveals God’s Character
Covenant shows us a God who binds himself to promises. Unlike pagan gods who act capriciously, YHWH commits himself through oaths, signs, and witnesses. His covenant faithfulness (חֶסֶד, hesed) is his defining attribute.
3. Explains Biblical Ethics
Covenant provides the framework for understanding biblical commands. The law isn’t arbitrary divine legislation—it’s the terms of relationship within God’s covenant family. “I will be your God, you will be my people” defines both privilege and responsibility.
4. Grounds Christian Hope
Our confidence in salvation rests on God’s covenant promises. He swore by himself (Hebrews 6:13-18) and cannot lie. Understanding covenant gives assurance rooted in God’s character, not our performance.
