Frozen Uncovered

Skadi, self-deification, and the highest-grossing cartoon about a woman becoming her own god

If your daughters were born after 2010, they've probably sung 'Let It Go' more than a thousand times. Disney built a billion-dollar empire on that song. It won an Oscar. Have you ever sat down and actually listened to the words?

Let's Read the Song Together

Here's what Elsa literally sings in the keynote number of the movie:

  • "A kingdom of isolation, and it looks like I'm the queen."
  • "Be the good girl you always have to be" — the old rules are oppression.
  • "Let it go, let it go, can't hold it back anymore."
  • "No right, no wrong, no rules for me. I'm free."
  • "I am one with the wind and sky."
  • "The past is in the past."
  • "That perfect girl is gone."

Compare It to This

▸ Isaiah 14:13–14

"For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of Elohim... I will be like the Most High."

That's Isaiah describing the Adversary's original rebellion. 'I will ascend. I will exalt. I will sit. I will be like the Most High.' It's the same structure as Let It Go. Both speeches say the same thing — I am my own god and I answer to no one.

Elsa climbs a mountain (the biblical high place of false worship), builds herself a temple out of ice using her own power, throws off her old identity, and declares independence from 'right and wrong.' She didn't outgrow arbitrary rules. She threw off moral categories.

But What About the Sister Bond?

Lots of parents defend Frozen by pointing to the ending — Anna sacrifices herself for Elsa, it's sisterly love, not romantic love. Isn't that Christian?

Look closely. Anna's sacrifice restores Anna, but it does not address Elsa's rebellion. Elsa never repents of the self-deification. She never returns to her responsibilities. She never apologizes for the chaos she caused. The rebellion is validated, not repented of.

And Frozen 2 makes it worse. By the end of the sequel, Elsa has become a full-blown shamanic figure — the mediator between worlds, the spirit-bride of nature. What started as a girl with magical powers ends with her as a goddess. That's two films spent completing the apotheosis.

What Frozen Teaches Your Daughters

  • The power inside you is yours, and it's good.
  • Rules about right and wrong are oppression.
  • Parents and authorities who told you to hide yourself were wrong.
  • The path to freedom is up the mountain, away from everyone.
  • Build your own temple. You are your own queen.
  • Spirits guide you to your true (divine) identity.

▸ Ephesians 5:6

"Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of Elohim upon the children of disobedience."
