The Signature in the Swarm
Five films. The same insect. Scripture named him first.
The Name
Ahaziah, king of Israel, was badly hurt and sent men to ask Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether he would live. Baal-zebub means lord of the fly. Elijah met the messengers on the road with a question and a sentence — is there not a God in Israel, and the king will not come down off that bed (2 Kings 1:2-4). He did not build the fly-god a temple. He asked him one question. That was enough. The same name is the title of the prince of devils in the gospels (Matthew 12:24).
So the fly belongs to a devil, and asking that devil about your own healing was a capital matter. That is the Book's position, stated twice, in both testaments.
Why Hollywood Reaches For It
Flies gather where something has died. They do not cause the death. They announce it.
That is what makes the swarm so useful to a storyteller. A cloud of insects tells an audience that something is deeply wrong here, and it says nothing at all about what law was broken, who broke it, or what it will cost to settle.
It is the feeling of guilt with the courtroom stripped out. And it carries a devil's name the audience is never told.
The Doctrine Underneath
Every film on this page turns on one question. Where does evil live?
Scripture answers plainly. Sin is the transgression of the law (1 John 3:4). A broken command. A charge on a record. It is not a substance in the flesh, not a residue in the meat, not an atmosphere a sensitive person can feel in a room.
If sin is a substance, it comes out by technique — a gifted man, a ritual, a transfer. No law, no court, no judge. That is sorcery.
If sin is a charge, it comes out by verdict — a standard, a witness, a sentence, and blood (Hebrews 9:22). That is Scripture.
Every swarm below is arguing for the first one.

The five are not connected by genre, studio, or decade. They are connected by an insect, and the insect has a name.
