Hebrews 4:9 — A Sabbath-Keeping Remains
Only here does the writer change his word for rest.
There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
Hebrews 4:9
All through Hebrews 3 and 4, the word for rest is the ordinary one. In verse 9 alone, the writer changes it. The new word is sabbatismos, built from the Greek verb for keeping the Sabbath. It means a Sabbath-keeping, and the verse says it “remaineth” for the people of God.
Many churches teach that the Sabbath was only a picture, that Yahushua is now the rest, and so the day is gone. Scripture shows one Sabbath, the seventh day, bearing witness to four things. It remembers creation (Genesis 2:2-3). It remembers deliverance (Deuteronomy 5:15). It is kept now as the sign between Yahuah and His people (Exodus 31:13). And it is still kept in the rest to come, when all flesh worships “from one sabbath to another” (Isaiah 66:23).
The rest in Messiah is real, and it is one of the things the day points to. It never replaces the day. Where Hebrews names what remains for Yahuah’s people, it uses a word built from keeping the Sabbath. The full case is in the foundation Sabbatismos: One Day, Four Witnesses.
