Hebrews 8:5 — Built to the Pattern

Moses did not design the tabernacle. He copied it.

Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

Hebrews 8:5

The quotation is Exodus 25:40. The Hebrew word for pattern is tabnith (H8403), a model or blueprint (Exodus 25:9). Moses did not design the tabernacle. He copied what Yahuah showed him on the mountain, down to the last ring and pin. Every piece was made to the plan of something real in heaven.

A shadow is cast by a real thing, and it has the shape of that thing. That is why the tabernacle can still teach. The laver, the lampstand, the table of bread, the altar of incense: each one shows a part of the work done in the living temple. Colossians 2:17 calls such things “a shadow of things to come.” A shadow is not thrown away when it has served its purpose; it is read for the outline of the body that casts it.
