Acts 2:3 — Cloven Tongues

Why would the fire come down divided?

And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

Acts 2:3

The pulpit reads the cloven tongues of Acts 2:3 as a display of power. The Old Testament reads a divided thing another way. In Scripture, what is divided is the offering, and the fire of Yahuah answers it.

The covenant was divided, and fire passed through it. Abram “divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another” (Genesis 15:10). Then “a burning lamp … passed between those pieces” (Genesis 15:17). The divided sacrifice sealed the covenant, and the fire was Yahuah’s own presence.

The offering was cloven, and fire consumed it. The bird of the burnt offering was cleaved “with the wings thereof … it is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire” (Leviticus 1:17). Cloven and fire belong together on the altar.

The new covenant was divided at the table. Yahushua said of the cup, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves” (Luke 22:17), and then, “This cup is the new testament in my blood” (Luke 22:20). The divided cup is the covenant.

The fire then came down divided. The word Luke uses for “divide” at the table is the same word used for “cloven” in Acts 2:3. The covenant cup was divided among the disciples, and the fire of Yahuah came down divided on the same men, resting “upon each of them.”

The fire no longer falls on pieces laid on an altar. It falls on the people, because the people are now the offering: “present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God” (Romans 12:1). The cloven tongues are not a show. They are Yahuah’s fire accepting the offering of the new covenant.

The tongues were divided so that the gathering could be complete, and Revelation shows its end: men redeemed by the blood “out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation” (Revelation 5:9).
