Pe'ah — The Corner of the Field

Hosea 2:8 — Corn, Wine, and Oil

Three words that have no man's work in them, and the name she gave them to.

For she did not know that I gave her corn, and wine, and oil, and multiplied her silver and gold, which they prepared for Baal.

Hosea 2:8

Scripture keeps a three-word phrase together: corn, wine, and oil. It reads like a grocery list, and it is not one.

The Hebrew does not use its ordinary words here. It does not say bread, or wine, or oil. It says dagan, tirosh, and yitzhar — grain still off the field, juice still running from the press, oil still fresh from the olives. Every one of the three names the thing before anybody has done anything to it. No grinding, no fermenting, no refining. There is no man’s work in any of them.

That is why the phrase keeps turning up in the same kind of place. The tithe and the firstfruits are commanded in these three words (Deuteronomy 14:23; Numbers 18:12). The blessing is promised in them (Deuteronomy 7:13). The curse takes them away by name (Deuteronomy 28:51), and Joel watches all three fail together (Joel 1:10). The subject is never what a man does with the harvest. The subject is where it came from.

Then Hoshea makes the charge:

“For she did not know that I gave her corn, and wine, and oil… which they prepared for Baal.”

Nothing failed. The harvest came in. She was holding three things whose own names declared that no man had touched them — and she carried them to Baal and thanked him.

What she held said who made it. She said another name.

Joel ends the matter the same way it was lost. Yahuah sends corn, wine, and oil again, and the stated purpose is not a full barn. It is that His people shall know who is in their midst, and that there is none else (Joel 2:19).
