Daniel 1:8 — Daniel Drew the Line at the Law
Daniel let Babylon teach him, but he would not let Babylon make him break the Law.
But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank.
Daniel 1:8
Babylon reshaped everything it could reach in Daniel. It taught him “the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans” (Daniel 1:4), and it gave him a new name, Belteshazzar (Daniel 1:7). Daniel did not refuse the school, the language, or even the name.
Then came the food: “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank” (Daniel 1:8). Defile is a Law word. Yahuah’s Law was given “to make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten” (Leviticus 11:47). Daniel let Babylon teach him. He would not let Babylon make him break the Law.
Yahushua prayed the same pattern over His followers: “I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world” (John 17:15-16).
“In the world but not of it” is usually taught as an attitude. Daniel shows where the line actually sits. A believer can live in Babylon, work in it, and speak its language. The line is the commandment, and where the world asks for that, the answer is no.
