Luke 1:36 — Elisheba and Elizabeth

Where the king's tribe and the priest's tribe met, twice, and what it pictures.

And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age…

Luke 1:36

When the angel told Mary she would bear a son, he gave her a sign: “thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age” (Luke 1:36). Luke had already said who Elizabeth was. She was “of the daughters of Aaron,” the wife of Zacharias the priest (Luke 1:5).

Mary was of Judah, of the house of David (Luke 1:27, 32). Elizabeth was of Levi, of the house of Aaron. Yet the angel calls them kin. The Greek word is syngenis, a relative, a woman of the same family. Scripture does not say how they were related. A daughter took her tribe from her father, so the likeliest bridge is Mary’s mother.

It happened before. When Aaron, the first high priest, took a wife, he married “Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab, sister of Naashon” (Exodus 6:23). Naashon was the prince of Judah (Numbers 2:3), and his line runs straight to David (Ruth 4:20–22; Matthew 1:4). The first priestly house in Israel began with a marriage between Levi and Judah.

The names match. Elizabeth is simply the Greek form of Elisheba. The first high priest’s wife was a daughter of Judah named Elisheba. Some fourteen centuries later, a priest’s wife named Elisheba is kin to the daughter of Judah who carries the Messiah.

Elisheba means “my El is an oath.” Hebrews says the Son’s priesthood came the same way, not by birth into Levi, but “with an oath by him that said unto him, Yahuah sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec” (Hebrews 7:21; Psalm 110:4).

The kinship does not make Yahushua a priest by blood. Hebrews is plain that “our Master sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood” (Hebrews 7:14). His priesthood rests on “the power of an endless life” (Hebrews 7:16), given when Yahuah raised Him. The family tie is a picture, not the legal ground.

The picture is king and priest meeting in one house. Melchizedek held both offices (Genesis 14:18). Zechariah foretold a Branch who “shall be a priest upon his throne” (Zechariah 6:13). Revelation finishes the thought: the Son has made His people “kings and priests unto God and his Father” (Revelation 1:6).
