Hebrews 2:17 — Made Like His Brethren in All Things

In all things, not some, and that changes what a high priest must be.

Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

Hebrews 2:17

“In all things.” Not partly, not in appearance only. Hebrews 2:14 says he took part of flesh and blood, and 4:15 says he was tempted in all points like as we are. James 1:13 says God cannot be tempted with evil. If Yahushua were God, one of those two verses would be false. Neither is false. Yahushua is a man, the Son of God, tempted in every point and still without sin.

The church teaches that he had to be God in order to save. Hebrews teaches the opposite: he had to be made like his brethren in order to serve as high priest. Every high priest is “taken from among men” (Hebrews 5:1). He serves “in things pertaining to God,” which means he serves toward God. He is not the God being served. The word for reconciliation is hilaskomai (G2433), to make atonement, the covering work of Yom Kippur carried out by a priest on behalf of the people.
