Hebrews 7:3 — Melchizedek Was a Man

Verse 4 calls him a man.

Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.

Hebrews 7:3

Many teachers say Melchizedek was the Son appearing before his birth, or some eternal being with no beginning. The chapter will not allow it. Verse 4 says, “consider how great this man was.” “Without descent” is agenealogetos (G35), without a recorded genealogy, and verse 6 explains: his “descent is not counted from them,” meaning from Levi.

The point is the record, not his birth. A Levitical priest had to prove his line, and men without a register were put out of the priesthood (Ezra 2:62). Scripture records no father, mother, birth, or death for Melchizedek, so the text lets him stand as a picture of a priesthood that does not pass from father to son. And he is “made like unto the Son of God.” A likeness is not the thing itself. If Melchizedek were the Son, the Son would be made like himself.
