Hebrews 10:26 — No Sacrifice for Willful Sin
Hebrews borrows a rule Moses already gave.
For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
Hebrews 10:26
“Wilfully” is hekousios (G1596), by deliberate choice. Hebrews did not invent this rule. Torah already had it. Numbers 15:27-29 gave an offering for the soul that sinned through ignorance. Numbers 15:30-31 gave none for the soul that sinned presumptuously, with a high hand: that soul was cut off. Hebrews carries the same rule straight into the new covenant.
Sin is the transgression of the law (1 John 3:4), and Yahuah’s Law is the truth (Psalm 119:142). The knowledge of the truth, then, includes knowing the commandments. The church teaches that all sins past, present, and future are already forgiven. Hebrews 10:28-29 says the man who despised Moses’ law died without mercy, and asks how much sorer the punishment for the one who has trodden under foot the Son of God. This is not about stumbling, for which there is an advocate (1 John 2:1). It is about choosing sin and staying in it.
