Hebrews 10:14 — Perfected Once, Still Being Sanctified
Two verb forms sit side by side in one line.
For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
Hebrews 10:14
This verse is a favorite for teaching that everything was finished the moment a person believed, with nothing left to walk out. Two different verb forms sit side by side. “Hath perfected” is a completed action. “Them that are sanctified” is hagiazomenous, a present participle, “those who are being sanctified.” Many translations render it that way.
The verse holds both stages of salvation in one line. The one offering completed what only it could do: the blood opened the way once for all. Sanctification goes on in those who entered. The next two verses show what that looks like: “I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them” (10:16). Hebrews 12:14 adds, “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.”
