Hebrews 9:14 — Purged to Serve
The blood cleanses for a purpose.
How much more shall the blood of Messiah, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Hebrews 9:14
“To serve” is latreuo (G3000). It is the word Hebrews uses for the priestly service of the tabernacle (8:5; 9:9; 13:10). The blood does not only cleanse; it cleanses for a purpose. The purged conscience is made fit to do the work of a priest before the living God. The blood is the entry, and the service is the walk that follows it.
Note also to whom the offering was made. Messiah “offered himself without spot to God.” The one offered and the one receiving the offering are two, not one. The “eternal Spirit” is not a third person standing between them. It is the Spirit of Yahuah that rested on the Son (Isaiah 61:1; Luke 4:18), as Peter said: “God anointed Yahushua of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power” (Acts 10:38).
