Jude 3 — The Belief Once Delivered
The belief was delivered once, so anything added centuries later is not part of it.
Ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
Jude 3
Jude urged believers to “earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 3). Once means one time. The belief was handed over whole in the days of the apostles. Nothing was left to be added later.
Paul set the same boundary: “though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed” (Galatians 1:8). Not even an angel could add to what was delivered.
The Trinity was not delivered to the saints. It was settled by church councils at Nicaea in 325 and Constantinople in 381, nearly three hundred years after Jude wrote. What the saints received was the confession Israel always held: “Hear, O Israel: Yahuah our God is one Yahuah” (Deuteronomy 6:4).
A doctrine that arrived three centuries late was not once delivered. By Jude’s own test, it is something to contend against, not something to contend for.
