Genesis 17:1-9 — The Covenant Is Still Future

Abraham's covenant had terms and a promise still ahead, and so does ours.

Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.

Genesis 17:9

When Abraham was ninety-nine, Yahuah said, “I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect” (Genesis 17:1). The covenant opened with a walk, and it came with terms: “Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee” (Genesis 17:9).

The promise inside it was future: “I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger” (Genesis 17:8). Abraham lived as a stranger in the very land he was promised. Stephen confirms he never received it: “he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him” (Acts 7:5).

Our covenant has the same shape: “For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise” (Hebrews 10:36). The will is done first. The promise is received after.

Many speak as if the covenant were finished the day they believed, and all that is left is to wait for death. Abraham’s covenant was not finished the day it was made. It was a walk with terms, toward a promise still ahead. Ours is the same: entered now, walked now, received at the end.
