Revelation 12:17 — The Dragon's Target

Revelation 12:17 names the only people the dragon goes to war against.

And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Yahushua Messiah.

Revelation 12:17

Revelation 12:17 names the only people the dragon goes out to fight. He makes war with “the remnant of her seed,” marked by two things: they “keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of” Yahushua Messiah. He does not war against everyone who carries the name of Messiah, only against those who carry both marks.

The commandments belong to Yahuah; the testimony belongs to Yahushua. No man has seen Yahuah at any time, and the Son “hath declared him” (John 1:18). The testimony is not a new law set against the old one. It is the spirit of prophecy (Revelation 19:10) bearing witness to the Law He lived in the flesh. The One who was seen and handled (1 John 1:1) cannot be the One no man has seen, and this verse keeps them distinct.

The lukewarm assembly, neither cold nor hot (Revelation 3:15-16), counts itself “in need of nothing” (3:17). Having set the commandments aside, it poses no threat to the dragon, so its road runs smooth. Paul promised the opposite to the obedient: “all that will live godly in” Messiah Yahushua “shall suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:12).

From the lukewarm side the picture runs backward. The easy road looks like blessing, and the commandment keeper’s hardship looks like judgment. Job’s friends read his suffering that way (Job 4:7), and Asaph envied the wicked until he went into the sanctuary and understood their end (Psalm 73:17). Yahushua called the persecuted blessed (Matthew 5:10-12). The enemies of the cross “mind earthly things,” but the citizenship of the obedient is in heaven (Philippians 3:19-20).

The dragon’s war is not evidence of Yahuah’s displeasure. It is evidence of the two marks. Revelation names these as the ones who endure, keeping the commandments of Yahuah and the belief of Yahushua (14:12), and who prevail by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony (12:11).
