Hebrews 6:1 — The Foundation Is Not the House

The altar call is the foundation. Hebrews says build on it.

Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Messiah, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

Hebrews 6:1

The writer lists the foundation: repentance from dead works, belief toward God, baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment (6:1-2). Every one is good and true. Yet he says to leave them, not by throwing them away but by building on them, and to go on to perfection. The word is teleiotes (G5047), maturity, full growth.

Many pulpits pour the same foundation every week: the altar call, the sinner’s prayer, the salvation sermon. The people never grow past it. Hebrews 5:12-14 calls this living on milk, and says strong meat belongs to those who “by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Discerning good and evil is the work of Torah (Deuteronomy 30:15-16; Romans 7:7). Entry through the blood is the foundation. Walking in the commandments is the house built on top of it.
