Proverbs 17:9 — The Matter Is True

The verse does not say he repeats a lie. It says he repeats a matter, and friends come apart.

He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.

Proverbs 17:9

Proverbs 17:9 puts two men side by side. “He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.”

Start with the word transgression. It means a real offense. Nobody covers something that never happened. So the proverb is not asking whether the thing is true — it has already granted that it is. Both men in the verse are holding the same true matter. The only difference between them is what they do with it.

One of them covers it. The other repeats it. And look at what the repeating costs: very friends — close ones, people who were bound to each other. Not strangers, not enemies. The verse does not say he repeats a lie. It says he repeats a matter, and friends come apart.

Luke 16 shows it happen. Someone brings the rich man word that his steward is wasting his goods (Luke 16:1). The steward loses his place over it. The master later calls him an unjust steward (Luke 16:8), so the report was accurate. A true report, carried, and a bond was finished.

This is where most of us were taught wrong. We were told the accuser works by lying. He does lie, but he does not have to. A truth carried into the space between two people does the job just as well — and it does it while the carrier still feels honest.
