Deuteronomy 6:8 — The Sign on the Hand and Forehead

Two things on the hand and forehead, and the horn that would change them.

And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

Deuteronomy 6:8

Deuteronomy 6 names its subject in the first verse: “the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments.” Verses 4–7 carry those words into every part of life: in the heart, taught to the children, spoken when sitting, walking, lying down, and rising up. Verse 8 then places them on the body, “a sign upon thine hand” and “frontlets between thine eyes.” The word for sign is ‘owth (H226), a mark or token. The hand is what a man does; the forehead is what he thinks. Deuteronomy 11:18 gives the same command again.

Scripture names several covenant signs, and each carries its own subject. Circumcision was the ‘owth of the covenant with Abraham, the promise of many nations and the land (Genesis 17:4–11). The Sabbath is an ‘owth between Yahuah and Israel, a perpetual covenant pointing back to the six days of creation (Exodus 31:13–17). Neither is placed on the hand and forehead. Only two subjects are. The first is the Law (Deuteronomy 6:8; 11:18). The second is the feast of the exodus. After the seven days of Hag HaMatzot, “it shall be for a sign unto thee upon thine hand, and for a memorial between thine eyes, that Yahuah’s law may be in thy mouth” (Exodus 13:9). The redemption of the firstborn from that same Pesach night is bound the same way (Exodus 13:16).

Daniel 7:25 says the little horn “shall think to change times and laws.” The Aramaic zeman (H2166) is a set time, an appointed season; dath (H1882) is law. These are the very two things Yahuah told His people to wear on the hand and the forehead: His appointed feasts and His Law. The mark of Revelation 13:16, “in their right hand, or in their foreheads,” sits in the same two places as a counter-mark: a changed calendar and a changed law, carried in deed and in thought. Against it stand those who “keep the commandments of Yahuah” (Revelation 14:12).
