Hebrews 1:9 — The Son Has a God

The verse after the Trinity's favorite throne verse says who anointed the Son.

Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Hebrews 1:9

Hebrews 1:8 is a favorite Trinity verse: “Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever.” The very next breath answers it. Verse 9 says the Son was anointed by “God, even thy God.” One who has a God over him is not that God. The writer is quoting Psalm 45:6-7, a royal wedding song sung to Israel’s king. Elohim there is a title for one who rules in Yahuah’s place, the same way the judges are called elohim in Psalm 82:6 and Exodus 22:28, and Moses was made “a god to Pharaoh” in Exodus 7:1.

Messiah means anointed one (mashiach, H4899). Someone has to do the anointing, and someone has to receive it. Yahuah anointed; the Son received. The verse also says “above thy fellows.” The word is metochoi (G3353), partners or companions, the same word Hebrews uses of believers in 3:1 and 3:14. Yahuah has no fellows. The Son does. He is the firstborn among many brethren (Romans 8:29), not a second person inside a godhead.
