Matthew 12:31-32 — The Unforgivable Sin

Speak against the Son and be forgiven; speak against the Spirit and never be. Equal persons do not carry unequal penalties.

And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

Matthew 12:32

Yahushua warned that a word spoken against the Son of man “shall be forgiven,” but a word spoken against the Holy Spirit shall not (Matthew 12:32). The setting is plain. He had just cast out devils “by the Spirit of God” (Matthew 12:28), which Luke records as “the finger of God” (Luke 11:20). The Spirit is Yahuah’s own power at work, the same Spirit Israel “vexed” in the wilderness (Isaiah 63:10).

If the Son and the Spirit were co-equal persons, an insult to one would weigh the same as an insult to the other. Yahushua set them on different scales. Speaking against the Son is forgivable; speaking against the Father’s own power is not. Equal persons do not carry unequal penalties.

Dispensational teaching answers by fencing the verse inside a closed age. The claim holds that the sin could be committed only while the Messiah walked the earth working miracles before witnesses, so no one can commit it today. Nothing in the passage says so. The doctrine exists to retire a verse that threatens the system.

Yahushua placed no expiration date on His words: “neither in this world, neither in the world to come” (Matthew 12:32). Mark records “never forgiveness” (Mark 3:29). After the ascension, Hebrews warns that willful sin after receiving the truth does “despite unto the Spirit of grace” (Hebrews 10:26-29), and John still names “a sin unto death” (1 John 5:16). Willful sin is willful transgression of the Law (1 John 3:4), so the warning stands wherever Torah is knowingly cast aside.

A doctrine that must add an age limit to protect itself has added to the words of the book, and Revelation closes with a warning to everyone who does (Revelation 22:18-19).
