Hebrews 12:1 — The Witnesses Are Not Watching From the Stands
Hebrews 11 says where the witnesses are.
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Hebrews 12:1
Funerals and sermons often picture the dead in heaven looking down and cheering the living on. “Witnesses” is martys (G3144), one who gives testimony. The cloud is the people of Hebrews 11, whose lives testify to belief. They surround the runner as a record, not as an audience.
Hebrews 11 says where they are. “These all died in faith, not having received the promises” (11:13). They “received not the promise: God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect” (11:39-40). They wait for the resurrection along with the living. Peter said the same of David: “David is not ascended into the heavens” (Acts 2:34). The dead know not any thing (Ecclesiastes 9:5). Their testimony speaks; their eyes do not watch.
