Hebrews 13:8 — What Stays the Same

Hebrews records the Son changing. So what stays the same?

Yahushua the Messiah the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.

Hebrews 13:8

Trinitarian teaching reads this as divine changelessness and pairs it with Malachi 3:6, “I am Yahuah, I change not.” But Hebrews itself records change in the Son. He was made a little lower than the angels (2:9). He learned obedience (5:8). He was made perfect (5:9). He was made higher than the heavens (7:26). The verse is not speaking of a divine nature. It speaks of his office and his word. His priesthood is unchangeable (7:24), and his teaching does not shift.

The verses around it settle the meaning. Verse 7 calls the reader to remember those who spoke the word of God. Verse 9 says, “Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines.” What Yahushua taught yesterday, he teaches today: not one jot of the Law shall pass (Matthew 5:17-19), and “if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments” (Matthew 19:17). Any doctrine that presents a different Yahushua now than the one who walked in the days of his flesh is a strange doctrine.
