Deuteronomy 22:11 — Wool and Linen Together
Why Yahuah kept wool off the priest in the inner court.
Thou shalt not wear a garment of divers sorts, as of woollen and linen together.
Deuteronomy 22:11
Torah sets three commands side by side: no mixed seed in the vineyard, no ox and ass plowing together, and no garment of woollen and linen together (Deuteronomy 22:9–11; Leviticus 19:19). The yoke command pairs a clean animal with an unclean one, and Paul carries it straight into the assembly: “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers” (2 Corinthians 6:14). The garment command is different, because the sheep is a clean animal. What separates wool from linen is that one is taken from an animal and the other grows up out of the ground. The command gives no reason in the place it is written.
Ezekiel supplies the reason. The priests who enter the gates of the inner court “shall be clothed with linen garments; and no wool shall come upon them,” and “they shall not gird themselves with any thing that causeth sweat” (Ezekiel 44:17–18). Sweat entered Scripture with the curse: “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread” (Genesis 3:19). Wool is the garment of sweat, the covering of man’s toil under the curse. Linen is the covering Yahuah appoints for those who stand before Him, and Scripture names what it is: “the fine linen is the righteousness of saints,” granted to the bride to wear (Revelation 19:8; Isaiah 61:10).
The believer is made a priest (1 Peter 2:9), and a priest does not enter Yahuah’s presence in a mixed garment. The righteousness he stands in is granted through the Messiah, and the walk in the commandments that follows is that same linen worn, not wool laid over it to earn a place. The mixed garment is still handed out from the pulpit: Messiah’s covering stitched together with days, customs, and traditions Yahuah never commanded, the sweat of man’s own invention carried into worship. Yahuah did not forbid mixing for its own sake. He forbade walking into His house wearing His covering and man’s at the same time.
