Numbers 13:16 — Yahushua Son of Nun Carried the Name Into the Land
Moses added Yah to the name of the man who would lead Israel into Canaan, and the new name was Yahushua.
And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Yahushua.
Numbers 13:16
Yahuah told Moses, “Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel” (Numbers 13:2). From the tribe of Ephraim went “Oshea the son of Nun” (Numbers 13:8). Before the men went out, Moses changed his name: “And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Yahushua” (Numbers 13:16).
Oshea means deliverance. Moses added Yah, the short form of the Name, so the new name means Yahuah is deliverance. Hebrew has no J, and since Yah is what was added, the name begins with Yah: Yahushua. English Bibles print it Jehoshua and shorten it to Joshua, which hides the very Name Moses put there. The man who would lead Israel into the promised land carried the Messiah’s name.
Hebrews takes this up: “For if Yahushua had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God” (Hebrews 4:8-9). The verse speaks of the son of Nun, yet the King James prints the same name here that it prints for the Messiah, because it is the same name. The son of Nun brought Israel into Canaan, but Canaan was not the rest. A rest still remains.
Canaan was the picture, and the son of Nun was the signpost. The first Yahushua led Israel into a land. The greater Yahushua leads His people into the rest of Yahuah that Canaan only pointed to.
