The second psalm gives the decree: "Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel" (Ps 2:9). The rod goes out "out of Zion" (Ps 110:2); the Branch smites the earth "with the rod of his mouth" (Isa 11:4); and Jeremiah breaks the potter's bottle, a judgment that "cannot be made whole again" (Jer 19:10-11). The book reads the rod as authority that cannot be broken, received at the resurrection, the rebel breaking like a vessel that resists the potter's will. The faithful share that righteous rule now, not political power. No millennial regime of force is in view; Isaiah's rod is a word from the mouth.
