The promise is made to David: "I will set up thy seed after thee... and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever" (2 Sam 7:12-13; Ps 89:3-4). Isaiah gives the image its shape: "a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people" (Isa 11:1, 10), and Jeremiah names Him the Branch raised unto David (Jer 23:5). The book reads "Offspring" as the heir of the Davidic covenant and "Root" as legitimacy and rightful authority within the promised line. Using "Root" to make Him David's pre-existent creator fails on Isaiah's picture: a root shoots from Jesse's stump, it does not plant it.
