42Swear

shaba — Hebrew

To swear is to bind oneself by oath — to invoke a higher witness and place oneself under penalty for breach. An oath was legally binding in the gravest way: “if a man swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond... he shall not break his word” (Numbers 30:2). Shaba is to bind by a solemn declaration, calling Yahuah to witness. When Yahuah swears “by himself” (Genesis 22:16; Hebrews 6:13), He binds His own word irrevocably. To swear is not casual speech but self-binding at law: the one who swears stakes himself on the truth or the performance of what he says, under sanction if he fails.
The Root

shaba (H7650) — to swear, to take an oath; to bind oneself by solemn declaration.

The Courtroom Word

An oath term — to bind oneself under penalty by solemn sworn declaration.

Its Role in the Court

An oath binds the one who swears — self-binding at law, invoking a higher witness and accepting penalty for breach. ‘He shall not break his word’: the sworn oath is irrevocable. Yahuah swears by Himself to bind His own promise beyond doubt. To swear is to stake oneself on the truth or performance of what is said, under sanction. It is the most solemn form of legal commitment — the word made binding by oath.

Proof Texts

Numbers 30:2 “If a man... swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word.” The oath binding and irrevocable.

Genesis 22:16 “By myself have I sworn, saith Yahuah.” Yahuah binding His own word.

Hebrews 6:13 “He sware by himself.” The oath that secures the promise.

Deuteronomy 6:13 “Thou shalt fear Yahuah... and shalt swear by his name.” The oath sworn under the proper witness.

In Plain Terms

To swear is to bind yourself by oath — to invoke a higher witness and accept penalty if you break it. ‘He shall not break his word’: a sworn oath was irrevocable. When Yahuah ‘swears by Himself,’ He binds His own word beyond doubt. To swear is self-binding at law, staking yourself on what you say.

Bring It Home

To swear an oath was to stake yourself on your word — calling Yahuah to witness, accepting the penalty if you failed. ‘He shall not break his word.’ And when Yahuah swore ‘by Himself,’ He bound His own promise irrevocably — there was no one greater to swear by. An oath is a word made binding under sanction.

Courtroom Roles
  • The one who swears (the party) binds himself under penalty for breach.
  • Yahuah (the Witness) invoked to witness the oath; who swears by Himself.
  • The oath (the bond) the self-binding declaration, irrevocable.
