The Revelation introduces no new symbol. Its trumpets and vials are the plagues of Egypt reissued; its sevenfold measure is the seven times more of Leviticus 26; its beasts are Daniel's, its measuring reed and eaten scroll are Ezekiel's, its lampstands and horses are Zechariah's. Every image has an address in the Law and the Prophets. Read against those texts the book interprets itself. Read as fresh material with nothing behind it, it becomes whatever a given century needs it to be.
