They Made Him a Face

The film sold as the finest picture of God breaks the doctrine it is selling.

The Shack — 2017, from the 2007 novel. Marketed to the Christian public as a breakthrough in understanding God.

What It Shows

Mack loses a daughter to a murderer and is invited back to the cabin where she died. There he meets three figures. Papa, the Father, appearing as a woman. Yahushua, a carpenter. And the Spirit, a woman named Sarayu — a river in India, taken out of Hindu scripture.

A fourth figure named Sophia sits as judge. Sophia is the Gnostic construction, and the film seats her on a bench.

Papa shows the nail scars in the wrists and says they were all there.

What It Teaches

• No chain of command among the three. All equal in every direction, no submission anywhere.
• Sin is its own punishment, and Papa says He has no need to punish it.
• Forgiveness without repentance, without confession, without blood.
• No commandment appears in the film. No standard Mack is measured against.

What Scripture Says

No likeness. Israel saw no manner of similitude at Horeb, and were told plainly that this was so they would not corrupt themselves by making one (Deuteronomy 4:15-16; Exodus 20:4). A bearded old man on a throne fails that test as surely as a woman does. This film was guilty at the casting call.

And He named Himself. Father, King, Husband, He — thousands of times, never once the other way, in a world full of goddesses He never permitted His people to borrow. Mack had a bad father, so the film built him one that felt better. That is a god shaped to fit a wound, which is the same machinery as the golden calf under better lighting.

The Son said the Father is greater than He (John 14:28). The head of Messiah is Yahuah (1 Corinthians 11:3). At the end the Son hands the kingdom back and is Himself subject (1 Corinthians 15:28). The film erases all three.

Then the wrists give it away. A Father who bleeds is not the Trinity. It is the Father suffering on the tree — the very thing the creed this film is selling condemns as heresy. The picture praised as the best explanation of the doctrine cannot state the doctrine correctly.

And nothing is shed in that cabin. Without shedding of blood there is no remission (Hebrews 9:22). No law is broken, so no charge stands, so nothing is required and nothing is paid. The grief is closed by feeling, and the murderer is never answered for.

He told us what to call Him. Nobody asked for a rewrite.
