"Yahuah rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire" (Gen 19:24). Moses makes it the standard of covenant ruin (Deut 29:23); David promises it as "the portion of their cup" (Ps 11:6); Isaiah sees Edom's streams "turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone" (Isa 34:9). Rev 14:10 sets the same fire and brimstone "in the presence of the Lamb." The book gives brimstone no separate reading and moves straight to the smoke. The doctrine of endless conscious torment reads into the image what Sodom's own example excludes: Sodom is not still burning; it is ash, "set forth for an example" (Jude 7).
