Aaron was to burn sweet incense on the golden altar every morning and evening, "a perpetual incense before Yahuah" (Exod 30:7-8). On Yom Kippur its cloud covered the mercy seat (Lev 16:12-13), and Aaron's incense stayed the plague (Num 16:46-48). David makes the meaning plain: "Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense" (Ps 141:2). In Revelation 5:8 and 8:3-4 the incense is explicitly the prayers of the saints. They do not vanish; they are gathered, offered, and finally cast to the earth, where prayer gives way to action. Teaching that the elders' bowls license prayer to departed saints reverses the image: the prayers rise to Yahuah, not through the dead.
