The cup belongs first to worship: "I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of Yahuah" (Ps 116:13). Babylon is "a golden cup in Yahuah's hand, that made all the earth drunken" (Jer 51:7), and Belshazzar fills the temple's golden vessels to praise gods of gold and silver (Dan 5:2-4). Ezekiel indicts priests who "put no difference between the holy and profane" (Ezek 22:26), and Habakkuk cries woe to him who makes his neighbour drunk (Hab 2:15). The harlot's golden cup is the holy corrupted: the cup looks sacred, the contents are poisonous, a weapon that strips discernment. Abominations in Torah are the practices that defile the land (Lev 18:26-30).
