Moses first warns of "gods, the work of men's hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear" (Deut 4:28), and names what stands behind them: "They sacrificed unto devils" (Deut 32:17). The Psalms mock idols that have eyes and see not (Ps 115:4-7), and Belshazzar praised "the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear" (Dan 5:23). Revelation repeats the full list to show no level of human society has turned from false worship. The claim that venerating images differs from worshipping them is answered by Exod 20:5, "Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them," and by Hezekiah breaking even Moses' brass serpent (2 Kgs 18:4).
