Fire and brimstone first fall on Sodom (Gen 19:24), and the Psalms rain it on the wicked (Ps 11:6). Ezekiel's northern host comes "all of them riding upon horses, a great company" with "fire, and brimstone" against it (Ezek 38:15, 22). Revelation's "two hundred thousand thousand" is overwhelming and unstoppable force, with Ottoman cavalry as the historical fit. Brimstone breastplates signal active judgment, lion heads destruction from command, serpent tails false teaching that governs, directs and enforces. Yet a plague is a corrective warning, not a final sentence; Amos's refrain "yet have ye not returned unto me" (Amos 4:6-11) stands behind Rev 9:20.
