The meal begins at Sinai, where the elders "saw Elohim, and did eat and drink" (Exod 24:11). The peace offering keeps the order: the fat burned on the altar first, then the flesh eaten by the clean (Lev 3:3-5; 7:11-21). The Prophets set a feast "of fat things" on the mountain where death is swallowed up (Isa 25:6-8) beside a sacrifice to which the birds are called (Ezek 39:17-20; Zeph 1:7). The book reads Revelation 19 as no literal banquet but the meal that follows the sacrifice: the feast follows the fire. The picture of a heavenly banquet held during a future tribulation fails: 19:9 and 19:17 are one supper seen from two directions.
