The Torah first sets the sword as a covenant penalty: "I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant" (Lev 26:25). Jeremiah and Ezekiel apply that sword to Judah (Jer 15:2-3; Ezek 14:17), and Zechariah's red horses ride among the patrols (Zech 1:8; 6:2). Red, adom, is tied to dam, blood. Revelation's red horse is bloodshed and imperial persecution, peace removed as covenant judgment, the age of Smyrna's suffering. Its "great sword" is the machaira the ruler "beareth not in vain" (Rom 13:4), not the rhomphaia that goes out of Messiah's mouth (Rev 1:16; 19:15). The future world-war reading misses Leviticus: the sword answers covenant breach, and the assembly endured it under Rome.
