Smoke first rises from judgment, when Abraham saw the smoke of Sodom go up "as the smoke of a furnace" (Gen 19:28). At Sinai the same furnace-smoke marked Yahuah descending upon the mount in fire (Exod 19:18), and in Isaiah's vision smoke filled the house of His presence (Isa 6:4). Revelation 9:2 inverts the sign: smoke "as the smoke of a great furnace" rises out of the pit, from below rather than above. It is a counterfeit presence. Light was withdrawn from above at the fourth trumpet, and now darkness rises from beneath, making deception easier to accept. The image warns the assembly that not every cloud comes from the throne; the direction of the smoke reveals its source.
