The lights were set "to rule" from creation (Gen 1:16). Isaiah darkens sun and moon over Babylon's fall (Isa 13:10) and clothes the heavens "with blackness... sackcloth" (Isa 50:3); Ezekiel does the same over Pharaoh (Ezek 32:7-8); Joel sees "the sun turned into darkness, and the moon into blood" (Joel 2:31). Those kingdoms fell while the sky stayed in place. Revelation's black sun and blood moon mean supreme and secondary authorities have lost their right to rule. The reading that waits for a literal eclipse sign is answered by Peter at Shavuot, who quoted Joel 2:31 and said, "this is that" (Acts 2:16-20).
