A ledger term — the record of a matter and the formal answer required for it.
The books are open, and every party is called to answer for his own. An account is not settled by sentiment; it is audited entry by entry. The sober weight of the word is that a day is appointed when each gives account — the record read back, the balance addressed.
Romans 14:12 “Every one of us shall give account of himself to Yahuah.” Each answers for his own ledger.
Luke 16:2 “Give an account of thy stewardship.” Produce the books; answer for the balance.
Hebrews 4:13 “All things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.” Nothing falls off the record.
Matthew 12:36 “They shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.” Even words are entered.
An account is both the record and the answer you give for it. The books are open, and a day is set when each person answers for his own — entry by entry, not in general.
A steward runs the estate all year, then the owner returns and says: bring the books. Not “tell me how it felt” — bring the books. That is an account: the record laid open and answered for. The court of heaven keeps one for every life.
