The scales are the balance of just measure — the instrument by which weight, and by extension judgment, is rendered fairly. Torah demands them honest: “a just balance and scales are Yahuah’s” (Proverbs 16:11); “thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights” (Deuteronomy 25:13). A false balance is “abomination to Yahuah” (Proverbs 11:1). The scales are also the image of judgment itself — a matter weighed, as Belshazzar was “weighed in the balances, and... found wanting” (Daniel 5:27). To weigh in the scales is to render a fair assessment; the just balance is the emblem of judgment done true.
