91Betroth

aras — Hebrew

Betrothal is a binding legal contract preceding the wedding — so firm that breaking it required a formal bill of divorce, and violating a betrothed woman carried the penalty of adultery (Deuteronomy 22:23-24). It was covenant, not courtship. This is why Yahuah says to Israel, “I will betroth thee unto me for ever... in righteousness, and in judgment” (Hosea 2:19) — the vocabulary of a ratified engagement with legal force, sworn in the language of the court. To be betrothed is to be legally bound before the union is consummated, held to the contract from the moment it is cut.
The Root

aras (H781) — to betroth, to engage by binding contract.

The Courtroom Word

A contract term — the binding engagement that precedes and secures the marriage.

Its Role in the Court

A covenant is often bound before it is consummated, and betrothal is that binding — the contract cut, the parties held to it, the penalties already in force. Yahuah’s betrothal of His people is spoken in exactly these legal terms: a pledge in righteousness and judgment, secured before the wedding. To be betrothed is already to belong, under contract.

Proof Texts

Hosea 2:19 “I will betroth thee unto me for ever... in righteousness, and in judgment.” The binding pledge in legal terms.

Deuteronomy 22:24 “The damsel, because... a betrothed wife.” The contract’s force before the wedding — its violation judged as adultery.

Deuteronomy 20:7 “What man is there that hath betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her?” The betrothed bond recognized at law.

2 Corinthians 11:2 “I have espoused you to one husband.” The assembly betrothed to the Messiah.

In Plain Terms

Betrothal was a binding engagement — a real contract before the wedding, so serious that breaking it took a divorce. Yahuah ‘betroths’ His people in the language of law: bound to Him before the union is complete.

Bring It Home

In that world the contract was signed long before the wedding day — and from that moment the two belonged to each other, held to every term. That is betrothal: not a promise to maybe marry, but a binding bond already in force. Yahuah pledges His people exactly so — already His, under contract.

Courtroom Roles
  • Yahuah (the Betrothing party) pledges the bond in righteousness and judgment.
  • The betrothed (the covenant party) bound from the moment the contract is cut.
  • The contract (the bond) in force before the wedding, penalties attached.
