Shalom is not merely peace-as-calm but the account paid, the books at zero — wholeness because nothing is outstanding. From the root shalam (to make whole, to pay in full), shalom is the state of a settled account: no debt owed, no breach open, all restored. “The chastisement of our peace was upon him” (Isaiah 53:5) ties peace directly to a price paid — our shalom is the result of a settlement. Shalom shares its root with restitution (the wrong repaid) and recompense (the account settled): peace is what remains when the ledger is squared. To have shalom is to stand with nothing outstanding against you.
