Wrap It In A Bow

Four empires left their fingerprints on the religion that claims a Hebrew Messiah. Not one of them worshipped the Elohim of Abraham.

The Card

A business card came back from the printer with five lines on it. Egyptian sun-worship. Babylonian mysticism. Greek philosophy. Roman Mithraism. Wrap it in a bow and call it Christianity.

Handed across a table, that card ends a conversation or starts one. It is not written to insult anyone sitting in a pew. It is a description of a building, floor by floor, and every floor of it was laid in the open by men who kept records of what they were doing. The records were never destroyed. They were simply left unread.

The Floor Was Laid Before the Protest

Before the first floor is named, one objection has to be answered, because it is the one that keeps almost every reader from finishing an article like this. The objection is that all of this belongs to Rome, and the reader left Rome a long time ago.

The building went up between the second and the fifth centuries. The protest arrived eleven hundred years later and argued about the top floor — indulgences, the priesthood, who is permitted to read the text, who holds the keys. Those were real arguments and some of them were won. But nobody went down to the foundation. The day of gathering was carried across untouched. The calendar was carried across untouched. The feasts, the immortal soul, the creed and its vocabulary — all of it was signed for and moved into the new house without inspection.

So there are no two camps in this letter. There is one house with one foundation, and the men who painted the walls a different color still live on top of it.

Egypt Brought the Sun

The golden ring painted behind the head of every saint and apostle is a sun disc. Egypt drew it behind Ra centuries before a painter in Rome set it behind a fisherman from Galilee.

The obelisk standing in the middle of Vatican square is not a monument built to look Egyptian. It is Egyptian — a solar pillar quarried for Heliopolis, the city of the sun, shipped across the sea and stood upright on a new floor. The crowned mother with an infant on her lap was carved in Egypt as Isis with Horus long before Bethlehem.

And then the day itself moved. The sun’s day came in as the day of gathering, and the seventh day, which Yahuah set apart and never unset, was handed off to the Jews as though the fourth commandment had been issued with an expiration date on it. That trade was made in the second and third centuries, and eleven hundred years later it was not reversed. It was ratified. The Protestant confessions do not claim a command of Scripture for it; they say the assembly appointed the day. Read that sentence slowly. The authority being claimed for moving a commandment of Yahuah is the authority of men, and it is claimed in the documents of the churches that exist because they rejected the authority of men.

Babylon Brought the Mother and the Calendar

Yirmeyahu stood in the street and rebuked households baking cakes for the queen of heaven. That title survived the empire that produced it, traveled west, changed clothes, and was fastened onto a Hebrew girl named Miriam who never claimed it.

Yehezqel was shown women seated at the north gate weeping for Tammuz, and the mourning ran forty days in the spring. The forty days of Lent arrive in the same season and run the same length. Lent did not stay behind in Rome either. It sits in the Lutheran, Anglican, and Methodist calendars, and it has been picked up in the last twenty years by evangelical congregations whose grandparents would not have recognized the word.

An English Bible still carries the word Easter in the book of Acts where the Greek text reads Pesach — a fertility goddess seated in the chair of a feast of Yahuah. And that Bible is the King James: translated by Protestant scholars, for a Protestant king, printed by Protestant houses for four hundred years, and not one of those printings has moved her out.

The reckoning of time came home from captivity as well. A day that starts in the dark instead of at dawn. Month names — Nisan, Tammuz, Elul — replacing the numbered months Yahuah gave. A planetary week named for the sun, the moon, and Saturn, turning on its own arithmetic with no regard for the moon set in the sky for the appointed times. No branch of the faith kept a different calendar. Every one of them keeps this one.

Greece Brought the Way of Thinking

Greece did not hand over a statue or a holiday. Greece handed over the categories.

Scripture says man became a living soul. It never says he was issued one that cannot die, and the prophet says plainly that the soul which sins shall die. Plato taught the opposite — that the soul is immortal by its own nature — and the assembly took Plato’s word over Mosheh’s. Once a soul cannot die, it has to be somewhere forever, and the doctrine of everlasting conscious torment was built to house it. That doctrine is not preached hardest in Rome. It is preached hardest from Protestant pulpits, and it has been the engine of Protestant preaching for three centuries.

Greece also brought the split between spirit and flesh, so that obedience performed with a body became carnal and the commandments of Yahuah were filed under a lower and fleshly order of things. And the teaching that the Law is bondage, that keeping it is falling from favor, that obedience is the flesh trying to earn what belief already secured — that teaching is not Rome’s. Rome never went that far. It is the Reformation’s doctrine, in its most confident and most popular form, and it is the single largest reason a believer today will not read Torah at all.

Then came Nicaea. Read the creed and look at the words carrying the weight. Substance. Essence. Person. Homoousios. Hypostasis. Not one of them belongs to the vocabulary of Mosheh, the prophets, or the apostles. They belong to the Greek lecture hall. A doctrine that can only be stated in the language of Greek metaphysics came from Greek metaphysics. And the creed was the one thing the reformers never reopened. They inherited it whole, signed it, and defended it — Geneva burned a man for denying it. Every objection the Reformation raised against Rome’s authority stopped at the door of that council. Yahuah never asked any man to believe in a shared substance or three persons in one essence. He said: Hear, O Israel, Yahuah our Elohim is one Yahuah. One. He is the Father. Yahushua is His Son, sent by Him and obedient to Him, who said plainly that His Father is greater than He is. What Nicaea cost was a Father and a Son, traded for a formula.

Rome Brought the Uniform

Mithras was the soldier’s god, and his birthday fell on the twenty-fifth of December — the birth of the unconquered sun. His initiates shared a sacred meal of bread and a cup while Rome had still never heard the name Yahushua. They descended into a pit, were drenched in the blood of a bull, and the inscriptions record that they rose born again for eternity.

The Puritans saw the twenty-fifth of December for what it was and banned it outright. Their grandchildren took it back, and it is now kept with more enthusiasm in Protestant homes than in any other, defended with the argument that the intention of the heart changes what the day is. That argument would have been rejected by the men who banned it.

That priesthood was ranked, and the highest rank was Pater — Father. Rome kept the ladder and kept the title, though the Messiah said call no man on earth your father. The objection to that title is one of the loudest in Protestant preaching, and it is made by men who wear the title Reverend — a word that appears once in the English Scripture, and there it belongs to Yahuah.

Constantine’s law of the year 321 orders rest on the venerable day of the sun. That is the wording of the statute itself, not a critic’s paraphrase. No reformer ever repealed it. It is the oldest standing law in the faith, and it is still being obeyed by people who believe they threw off Rome’s laws.

The Honest Part

None of this says that every soul inside those walls is lost. Most of them were handed this. They did not build it, they did not vote on it, and they have been told their whole lives that it is the ancient way. It is not ancient. It is late, it is borrowed, and it is written down.

So the work is not to believe a man on a screen or a card in a wallet. The work is one hour with a search engine and an honest question. Find out where the Vatican obelisk was quarried. Read Constantine’s sun-day edict in its own words rather than in somebody’s summary of it. Open a lexicon on homoousios and learn what century the word entered the argument and who was in the room. Open the confession of the denomination on the sign out front and find what it says about the day of rest. Not what the pastor says. What the document says. None of it is buried. It sits in the encyclopedias, in the councils’ own minutes, in the writings of church historians who were proud of the exchange. It stays a secret only because almost nobody goes and looks.

What Is Left Standing

Strip the borrowed layers off and the floor underneath is still there. The name of the Father. His Son, His blood, His way in. His calendar written in the sun, the moon, and the stars. His Sabbath. His feasts. His commandments, walked out by a delivered people who love Him.

Entry comes through the blood. The walk that follows is the bread. Nothing about the second cancels the first, and nothing about the first excuses the second.

Come Out

The call at the end of the Book is not a man’s to give. A voice out of heaven speaks over a city that traffics in the souls of men: Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.

My people. He names them as His own while they are still standing inside her. The call is not aimed at strangers. It is aimed at believers who love Him and have never once been told what they are standing in.

And the city is not a denomination. A man does not step out of her by walking across the street to a building with a different name on it, because the same floor runs under both. He steps out by going back to what Yahuah said, in the words Yahuah used, on the days Yahuah set.

The command is not defend her. Not reform her. Not wait her out.
