Hannah first confesses that "Yahuah killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up" (1 Sam 2:6). Isaiah exposes Judah's "covenant with death" as annulled (Isa 28:18) and promises "He will swallow up death in victory" (Isa 25:8); Hosea answers, "O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction" (Hos 13:14). In Revelation the keys are a jurisdictional claim: the enemy can threaten, but he cannot lock the door. Death and Hades follow the pale horse, give up their dead, and are destroyed. The notion that the adversary holds the keys of death is answered by Rev 1:18; the keys were given, as Eliakim's was (Isa 22:22).
