Balaam could not curse Israel (Num 22-24), so he counseled Moab to make them sin: the people "began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab" and ate the sacrifices of their gods (Num 25:1-3), "through the counsel of Balaam" (Num 31:16). Moses barred Moab and Ammon for hiring him (Deut 23:4-5), and Micah called Israel to remember it (Mic 6:5). In Revelation 2:14 the doctrine of Balaam is the doctrine of compromise, mixture that looked small at first but ended in serious spiritual defilement. Its two charges, idol offerings and fornication, are judged by Levitical holiness law (Lev 18:1-5), answering the claim that the Torah's standards no longer bind the assembly.
