The ninth plague is "darkness which may be felt" over Egypt, while "all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings" (Exod 10:21-23). Isaiah sees men who "curse their king and their Elohim" and "shall be driven to darkness" (Isa 8:21-22), and Amos and Zephaniah call the day of Yahuah "darkness, and not light" (Amos 5:18; Zeph 1:15). The fifth bowl falls on the beast's throne, authority made operational, so power has collapsed (Rev 16:10). The gnawing of tongues is recognition with nowhere to go, and their refusal to repent is, like Pharaoh's hardening (Exod 9:34-35), character, not confusion. Goshen's light amid Egypt's darkness shows Yahuah's people kept within the plague zone, not removed from it.
