Fire first came "out from before Yahuah" to consume the offering at the tabernacle's dedication (Lev 9:24). On Carmel it fell on Elijah's altar and the people cried, "Yahuah, he is the Elohim" (1 Kgs 18:38-39). Yet the Torah warns that a prophet may give a sign that comes to pass and still lead to other gods (Deut 13:1-3), and Job shows "the fire of Elohim" falling from heaven at the adversary's hand, under permission (Job 1:16). The book reads the earth beast as counterfeiting the one sign Israel was taught to trust. The signs are real; the authority behind them is wrong. Miracles do not prove a ministry; obedience tests the sign (Deut 13).
