Ashes thrown toward heaven become "a boil breaking forth with blains" on Egypt, so that even the magicians cannot stand before Moses (Exod 9:9-11). Leviticus uses the same shechin in its uncleanness law (Lev 13:18-20), and Israel is warned that Yahuah will smite the disobedient "with the botch of Egypt" (Deut 28:27). Uzziah, struck with leprosy, is cut off from the house of Yahuah (2 Chr 26:21). The first bowl falls on those bearing the beast's mark (Rev 16:2): the sores make visible on the outside what was already real on the inside, a ritual uncleanness that bars entry to the sanctuary (Lev 15:31).
